Successful communities of practice within organisations can: support ongoing learning and professional development; help break down silos, making it easier to get work done; support knowledge sharing, led to creating better practices and result in happier staff.
Emily has experience in building organisational communities of practice in organisations including: Government Digital Service (GDS), Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the co-op. She has also published a book called Building Successful Communities of practice as a guide to others.
She has developed a maturity model, which she has uses with a range of organisations to help assess where they are and workshops to focus them on next steps. Then works with organisations to make them work.
Community of practice consulting includes:
- structuring communities within organisations
- developing individual communities
- coaching community leads
- community focused workshops
“I really liked the maturity framework it has been very useful to measure the current state of the community. It has also helped me build a plan for improving the maturity of the community, by providing some of the softer elements as well as the tangible elements which need to be addressed. It was good to get an outward perspective on the maturity of the community, as sometimes working closely on these things on a daily basis you sometimes start to be inward looking and blinkered to new ideas so this was refreshing.”
